Carnevale

For a greater understanding on this post, if you can speak Italian, read my Culture classes presentation! click here: Carnevale

If you've heard of Mardi Gras, you've got the idea behind Carnevale. Masks, party, Fat Thursday and Fat Tuesday, etc. It's a big celebration if you go to the right spot. In Italy, that's usually Venice, but unfortunately I can't be there because, whether you believe it or not, I have class. :P

The presentation above was made by my culture class. We all dressed up a little bit - I went as La Strega d'Oro and as you can see, there was an array of other costumes. For Fat Thursday, we were on a ferry on our way back from Sicily. However, we were happily in Viterbo today where we witnessed several people covered in confetti and little children dressed up. In recent years, Carnevale has been more confined to the house and private parties, but there was still evidence around the center of the festivities.

There are some delicious treats we got to eat as well. The bakeries were filling the streets with sugary perfumes of fried goodness such as castagnole (basically donut holes) and chiacchiere (fried dough covered in powdered sugar or honey).

As everyone prepares for Lent, here's my wish to you for a lovely, sugar-filled Fat Tuesday!
