Molte Grazie, Bvlgari!

Mondays usually bring me down (am I alone there?), but I had to admit yesterday was a pretty exciting one.

Bvlgari (pronounced "bull-ga-ri") is without a doubt one of the world's best jewelers. In fact, after the incredible things I saw yesterday, Bvlgari is officially my favorite. The daughter of the president Paolo Bulgari is named Natalia, who is an SYA Spain alum. She has never forgotten her SYA experience, and my art history teacher asked her to do us a little favor. A simple "would it be ok if we got a little behind-the-scenes tour?" turned into a day long adventure around Rome for a group of us SYAers.

In the morning, we jumped into a van which took us to their factory in the outskirts of Rome. I can't reveal their top secrets or share with you photos or information, but I will say I learned a lot. Bvlgari makes exclusive pieces that take MONTHS to prepare, all by one person. They become practically the artisan's children. One worker will spend four to six months on one piece, often changing the design as it comes to life. All the changes reflect the pieces practical function as well as pure elegance. It was amazing to see so many skilled people at work - and all so passionate! We saw metal workers and gem cutters, all enthused by their craft. Beautiful sketches were everywhere and made me yearn for millions of euro.

After an interesting look at the factory, off to Piazza di Spagna we went! We got a guided tour through the flagship store where we got the opportunity to admire one-of-a-kind pieces that all had a unique story. On top of things up for purchase, I sat where Audrey Hepburn did when she bought some delicate pieces of jewelry in a private room and saw the watch used in Iron Man. I was in a museum proprio. The brand is so prominent in films they have really made a name for themselves in Hollywood.

To wrap it all up, Bvlgari bought us a traditional long Italian lunch. I went home full and with a sparkle in my eye.
